Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme wins Engineering Project of the Year

Glan Agua and MEIC are delighted to announce that the project was awarded the Engineering Project of the Year in the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2018.

Having been shortlisted to six nominees in early October, the project secured the award at the Excellence Awards Ceremony on the 9th November following a public vote. This comes following the official opening on the 5th November and the removal of the scheme from the EPA’s Remdial Action List (RAL) on Tuesday, 30th October.

The scheme provides a safe and sustainable drinking water for over 62,000 people in “Ireland’s Tourism Capital”.

Glan Agua / MEIC with Nicholas O’Dwyer / Tobin Consulting Engineers and Irish Water in association with Kerry County Council are delighted to win the Engineering Project of the Year Award for the development of a new water treatment plant in Central Kerry. The new Lough Guitane water treatment plant is one of the largest in the country and can provide 51 million litres of treated drinking water every day to over 62,000 customers in the communities of Killarney, Tralee, Castleisland and Castlemaine.

Killarney is Ireland’s tourism capital, receiving 1.1 million visitors annually, supporting over 3,000 local jobs and generating €410 million every year. The €30 million upgrade to the Kerry Central Water Supply Scheme is a key element in ensuring the continued economic prosperity of the region by putting in place the necessary infrastructure for the provision of a safe and reliable water supply and safeguard the region’s reputation as a world famous tourist destination.

The Kerry Central Water Supply Scheme was listed on the Remedial Action List of the Environmental Protection Agency as having: Inadequate treatment for Cryptosporidium and elevated levels of trihalomethanes above the standard in the Drinking Water Regulations. The new water treatment plant comprises of the required treatment processes which address these risks to drinking water quality.

Glan Agua was appointed as Design Build Operate Contractor for the scheme. Irish Water, in association with Kerry County Council, acted as the Contracting Authority and oversaw the Project from inception to final commissioning phase. When the WTP was commissioned it was handed over to our operations team, who will now operate this new facility. Construction commenced in April 2016 and was substantially completed within a 24-month period, on budget and to a very high standard

Glan Agua Ltd, along with sister company MEIC Ltd, were delighted to be part of this project which represents that how hard work, innovation and collaboration achieve the common goals of the project, stakeholders and the engineering industry as a whole.
