Glan Agua Ltd. are delighted to be working with Irish Water and Cork County Council on the delivery of the Boherbue Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Works commenced on-site in August and despite the inclement weather conditions in recent weeks, works are progressing well and are on programme. The contract is being delivered through the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Framework. Glan Agua Ltd. were delighted to be involved in the project from early concept design, brought the project through planning which was issued in February 2022, and are now in the construction phase, as per picture below.

Current Progress on-site in Boherbue
The long-awaited upgrade for Boherbue is set to be completed by 2024 and will ensure that any liquid waste that is discharged meets standards set by the EPA licence. In addition, modernisation and improvement of the wastewater infrastructure will ensure that cleaner and safer effluent is being discharged into the Brogeen River and will accommodate further growth in the Boherbue Area. The upgrade has paved the way for the construction of up to 20 new homes in the area.
The project involves decommissioning the existing plant and its associated structures and will also re-use the existing constructed wetlands to maintain habitats for animals and plants. In all areas of the WWTP design, sustainability and innovation were at the fore-front in terms of the design solutions put forward at planning stage, a major benefit of the ECI programme.
Wildlife will flourish in the existing wetlands, and the design includes newly constructed Sludge Drying Reed Beds in conjunction with over 100 Solar Panels on-site, this will mean that significant power will be generated on-site and all solids will be treated on-site through the use of the sludge drying reed beds.
In its totality, the new facility will see the construction of new inlet works, a stormwater tank, a biological treatment process, tertiary solids removal, sludge drying reed beds, and a solar farm.
Glan Agua Ltd. are delighted to be working closely with Irish Water on numerous other projects delivered through the ECI Framework. Works are currently underway in Castletownsend, Incheelagh and White-gate Aghada, and construction of the Ballycotton WWTP will commence in 2023.
At the start of this year in County Cork, there were five towns & villages discharging untreated wastewater into rivers and seas, Glan Agua Ltd. are delighted to be a strategic delivery partner for Irish Water in removing this practice and improving water quality in the respective receiving waters, safeguarding the environment and supporting the future development of local communities.
